US air traffic controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid during the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told a news outlet on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were instructed to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been absent, leading airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by weather and additional factors.

More than 3,000 US flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary stated he anticipates the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I observe the stress," he said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of income to make ends meet?'" he added.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields indicated flights would be held up due to a lack of workers - among the peak since the shutdown began.

The American federal closure entered its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, making it the second-longest shutdown in the past.

He has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would slow down the number of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his interview, he would not answer directly when asked if it was secure to travel by air in the United States, and instead made a personal plea to the professionals.

"I need my controllers concentrating on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at home," Duffy said.
