The distinctive yellow-colored residential building visible behind assisted us verify the footage.

Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that purport to show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to check the location of where the images were from was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the video.

Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were captured.

We also checked that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
