France will start intercepting migrant vessels in Channel following British demands
France has agreed to start stopping small boats in the Channel, after months of insistence from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the Prime Minister wrote to the President asking him to back the initiative and saying there currently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French security forces will be allowed to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to official confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to prevent the heavily loaded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both personnel and civilians.
"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this month... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police representative says officers will start taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible method to snarl the engines of the boats.
The decision to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a brief shift towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister departed from office.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and French president, when French police were observed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be allowed to stop boats prior to they collect migrant individuals from the beaches of northern France, although it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for methods to adjust to evade interception, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
