Israeli citizens mark two-year remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations advance
People have gathered around the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The incident resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"The aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the leader added on that day.
He also promised to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred across the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of people who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was observed throughout the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' representatives convened in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the proposal.
A high-ranking delegate involved in the negotiations said that an evening round of negotiations started at evening in Egypt.
The representative stated the day's discussions concluded without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not recommence combat after the first phase of the agreement.
He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to achieve any significant progress," but noted that mediators are working hard to close the differences between the both parties.
Essential Issues in Discussions
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance distribution
- After-conflict administration of the area
Citizen Reaction
In the city's public square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member lived through the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until every captive return no one will be secure."
"When we see everybody home returned, we can breathe once more. Then we can start to rebuild," she continued.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their backing for the relatives of the hostages. Israel states forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Activist Atalia Regev stated: "We must do whatever arrangement required for the captives to be released. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be protected."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that about seventy percent of the population prefer the war to end in exchange for the freedom of the abducted.
Gaza Conditions
At the site of Nova festival, mourners came together to honor the dead.
From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people said the intense Israeli attacks persisted.
In the urban center, bombardments were documented in the early hours of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality areas and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"Once the dusk comes, the anxiety appears with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, explained.
"We are afraid of the attacks. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, notably my little child who rests his face on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will come back to us."
Medical Situation
The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had received the remains of several people by the daytime, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of that area indicated additional fatalities had been delivered. A person was lost his life by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the south, medical staff reported.
