Puzzling Pink Sludge on Isolated Tasmanian Beach Raises Fears of Possible Phytoplankton Proliferation

Officials in the island state are working to identify a pink slime that has materialized on a isolated coast, with a number of researchers anxious it could be an algae outbreak.

Widespread Presence Along Coastline

The rosy-colored ooze materialized across a section of a southern bay about 60 kilometers south of the capital. A comparable ooze has also been recorded on areas of a nearby shore and an additional coastal site.

Samples Taken for Testing

Specimens have been taken and submitted to the Environment Protection Authority for analysis. A official commented that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural event in reaction to shifts in nutrients, temperature, precipitation or illumination".

"These blooms are at times called crimson or rosy tides because the blooms can color the water red," the official added. "Few algal blooms are harmful, with numerous types serving as a key source of nourishment for animals in the marine food web."

The scientist said this organism did not produce harmful substances like the type involved in the previous devastating algal bloom, but it does consume small invertebrates and "numerous fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were in greatest danger.

"You usually see a proliferation of the organism after a outbreak of something else, or for example a marine breeding," she said.

Appeals for Action and Safety Concerns

A marine scientist, who collected samples of the rosy slime in Tasmania, commented it appeared the potential proliferation had "expanded greatly" and indicated the aquaculture sector was the probable cause, referring to comparable events elsewhere.

"Thus Tasmania needs to deliver a strong warning here, the authorities and the environmental agency need to act to this. We need to study the samples we've taken and we need to put word out the people here," she emphasized.
