Why Los Blancos Have 'Utter Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage makes club a historic moment in a key Champions League tie against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a last eight place.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent Through The Academy
This talent is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.
He joined Real from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.
Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and determination he added to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the first team and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his career as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated the player after his debut.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."
Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.
Pitarch has seized it with performances that have belied his age and inexperience.
"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He's extremely dynamic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand people are surprised to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It is delightful to have a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before entering the club's famous youth academy.
He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they play in a official senior international match.
He has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are watching his rise with interest.
In a recent interview, the player said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion soon."
This scenario echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine chose Spain, Brahim decided to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He played over an hour in the two-one victory at City, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team chase trophies to come.
Following his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.
"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I have to earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
