A Groundbreaking Leader

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Leadership
